About this website and the community website project

A group of locals have formed an association - Wollongong Community Website Inc – to set up and manage this community website for Wollongong.

The interest in the site has been incredible: jazz groups, astronmomy and photography clubs, ethnic and migrant communities, performing arts, the University, local businesses. It seems everyone wants to make sure that they are on the new website

For many years, Australian state and federal governments have been trying to promote the use of the Internet and the Web. Recently, the government asked the Australian Domain Name Authority (auDA) to set up domain names for every city, town and suburb in Australia. These domain names would not be .com, .gov or .org names. They were intended for the whole community, so the new domain name would just be the name of the community, like:

wollongong.nsw.au, broome.wa.au, ballarat.vic.au, hobart.tas.au, whyalla.sa.au

Domain names are valuable, so the government needed to define a process to ensure that ONLY a genuine local community could register a community's domain name. This process was defined by the “One City, One Site” Project. No-one can register a community's domain name from the domain name authority unless they successfully complete the OCOS process.
