Shhhh... Don't tell too many people! |
Wollongong is Australia's most liveable regional city located
just south of Sydney. It is a vibrant and diverse area of NSW
which is becoming renowned for innovation, culture and education.
Wollongong's beaches are a closely guarded secret: clean, uncrowded
and majestic. The landscape is dominated by the dramatic coastline
to the east and the towering escarpment to the west. The city
of Wollongong is nestled between the two, reminiscent of a romantic
town on the Adriatic coast. The escarpment is a popular launching
point for hang-gliders, travelling the two or so kilometres from
the cliffs to the coast.
The food culture in Wollongong has always been rich and varied.
The population swelled in the 1950s and 1960s as BHP (now Bluescope)
employed migrant workers in the steelworks. These families from
Italy, Greece and many other European countries brought with
them their love of food and of entertainment. In later decades
they were joined by families from South East Asia and the Middle
East. There is certainly enough to go around... The heart of
the city is adorned with a bewildering array of restaurants,
cafes and eateries.
Time spent in Wollongong reminds the local and the visitor alike
of the finest things: food, wine, friends and a stunning view.
